Do you ever just step out of the everyday and do something different? Recently, I started spending my Sundays differently from the past.
A few gals here in the park started watercolor painting together about a month ago. I happened in one Sunday and was so happy to see them painting and asked to join them.
When we started to RV, which coincided with our early retirement, I decided I wanted to try to learn to paint with watercolors. DH, always supportive, bought me a pad of watercolor paper and lots of paint, and a good supply of brushes. He went to a family friend for suggestions and she, along with our artist daughter who gave me a lovely paintbox and palette, got me started. I bought a book on “Getting Started in Watercolor” and it was a great book. I faithfully did every single lesson in the book! It was fun and even relaxing for me, and back at that time I was only doing one quilt at a time so I still had plenty of time to dabble in paints.
For a few years while we were work-camping, we were at a big RV Resort in Florida where there were lots of artists at all levels and I got involved in some painting sessions with them. We were lucky to have two former college art instructors in the group and they helped us along in our skills. THEN…we moved on and I didn’t paint as much. Pretty soon I didn’t really paint more than a few times in the summer. I kept a small watercolor journal of the things I saw in nature while working in the state parks but that was about it.
Now, I’m getting back to my paints. I have set aside these Sunday afternoons to paint, to leave the quilts aside and work with the water and the colors. It’s creating, just with different materials. I feel out of practice and like I’ve forgotten a lot of things about painting that I had learned but I’m trying to be kind to myself and just enjoy the ride.
I thought you might like to see what I painted today. My friend has an art book her DH gave her and I was looking through it last week when I saw a very colorful rooster scene and decided to give it a try. It’s a looser style than I usually do, but it turned out to be fun to try it. Here’s the result.
Not bad for just getting back into the painting, I think. I need to fix his feet but I think I’m just about finished with him.
Tomorrow is a new day, and I’ve got a big project to get back to. I’m working on a commissioned stitching piece and want to try to get it finished, or at least just about finished this week. I’ve been working on it for the past few weeks, bit by bit.
I also have a class to teach, in sewing, a week from tomorrow, so I’ll be putting together the steps for that. You KNOW I’m going to share that with you too!
I’ve received another Bee Biased December Queen block and I have a new Improv-Robin block to share. So you see, there’s plenty going on in my life. Come back soon to see what’s new!
I also want to thank those who came by during the “Grow Your Blog” party and those who will continue to come by to check out my blog. I see I have a few new followers, and I thank you for following my blog. I hope you enjoy it. I appreciate each and every person who reads my blog, follower or not! Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to stop by here and read about my days and my activities.
